چکیده

We study job durations using a multivariate hazard model allowing for workerspecific and firm-specific unobserved determinants. The latter are captured by unobserved heterogeneity terms or random effects, one at the firm level and another at the worker level. This enables us to decompose the variation in job durations into the relative contribution of the worker and the firm. We also allow the unobserved terms to be correlated. For the empirical analysis we use a Portuguese longitudinal matched employer-employee data set. The model is estimated with a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) estimation method. The results imply that firm characteristics explain around 30% of the variation in log job durations. In addition, we find a positive correlation between unobserved worker and firm characteristics. ∗Bank of France, DGEI-DEMS-SAMIC, 31 rue Croix des Petits Champs, 75 049 Paris Cedex 01, France, and UC Louvain. Wage Distributions by Bargaining Regime: Linked Employer-Employee Data Evidence from Germany

Wage Distributions by Bargaining Regime: Linked Employer-Employee Data Evidence from Germany Using linked employer-employee data from the German Structure of Earnings Survey 2001, this paper provides a comprehensive picture of the wage structure in three wage-setting regimes prevalent in the German system of industrial relations. We analyze wage distributions for various labor market subgroups ...

Gender Wage Gaps Reconsidered: A Structural Approach Using Matched Employer-Employee Data

In this paper I propose and estimate an equilibrium search model using matched employer-employee data to study the extent to which wage di¤erentials between men and women can be explained by differences in productivity, disparities in friction patterns or wage discrimination. The availability of matched employer-employee data is essential to empirically disentangle di¤erences in workers product...

A Distributional Framework for Matched Employer Employee Data

We propose a framework to estimate earnings distributions and worker and firm unobserved heterogeneity on matched panel data. We introduce two models: a static model that allows for interaction effects between workers and firms, and a dynamic model that allows in addition for Markovian dynamics in earnings and mobility decisions. We establish identification in short panels. We develop a tractab...

Understanding the NativeImmigrant Wage Gap Using Matched EmployerEmployee Data. Evidence from Germany

Hellerstein and Neumark (1999) developed a straightforward method to detect wage discrimination using matched employer-employee data. In this paper a new method to measure wage discrimination is proposed, that builds on the ideas first developed by Hellerstein and Neumark. It has four main advantages: it is robust to labor market segregation, it does not impose linearity on the wage setting equ...
